Protect Your Data, Protect Your Business

Computers have made it much easier for us to get things done at the office but if you operate a business, they also present a significant security risk for both your business and your employees. That is why it is very important for you to understand how to properly protect your data so that it is not going to be compromised. This can be done in a number of different ways, all the way from basic data protection up to server security, which will help to keep you safe when operating in the cloud. Here are some specific things that you can do in order to make sure that your data is as secure as possible.

Perhaps the most important thing that you can do for your company in order to protect your data is to back up the information on your computers regularly. Some people make a habit of doing this on a nightly basis but there are now software solutions which will help you to back up information as it is being updated. You need to ask yourself how much data you would be willing to lose and then adjust accordingly. Make sure that if you do back up regularly, that you back up to a server that is off-site or take your nightly backups home with you.

Documents present a security risk for many businesses but there are solutions in place now which will help you to password protect those documents in order to keep prying eyes from seeing them. Even Microsoft office and Adobe Acrobat now contain these types of security measures. Although it is not going to be necessary for you to password protect every document that passes through your business, there may be times when it is necessary to stay in compliance with industry regulations. Be sure that people who work for your company are up to speed on how to do this effectively.

Disk encryption is also something that should be considered and although small businesses may not need to encrypt an entire disc, large businesses are going to find it to be very secure. The encryption that takes place on the disc is going to happen automatically when the data is added to it. There are also many solutions available for encrypting smaller, mobile devices including flash drives and removable USB drives.

Finally, make sure that your server is as secure as possible. This is something that many of us are not up to speed on so we may need to hire someone to make sure that the server security is properly in place. There are also software solutions available which can help to make this an easy chore or can help to keep the server secure, once it has been set up properly. Along the same lines, if you're going to be operating on a remote server, you should make sure that they have all of the security measures in place as well. Bear in mind, this is not only important for your company but also for any sensitive customer data that you may be handling.
